Ride into the 2G Sunset with GPS Technologies

June 30, 2016 Published by

Have you updated your GPS tracking device yet? AT&T and T-Mobile are shutting down their 2G networks to open up more channels for newer technologies to run on. This shut down is also referred to as the 2G Sunset. Consequently, all tracking systems from GPS Technologies are moving away from 2G and transitioning to a 3G network. If you haven’t made the transition yet here’s what you need to know:

  • AT&T is shutting down their entire 2G network.

  • The 2G Sunset has already begun in some locations.
  • By January 1, 2017 all 2G trackers will stop reporting.

  • Until then, 2G coverage will gradually deteriorate throughout 2016.

If this is the first time you’re hearing about the 2G Sunset then you probably have questions. Below you will find answers to frequently asked questions.

Do I have to replace my 2G units with 3G units?

Yes. All 2G tracking units must be replaced with 3G units before the end of of 2016. All 2G units will stop reporting by January 1, 2017. If you wait until after the 2G shut down to replace your tracking devices you risk losing valuable reports.

How much is it going to cost me to make this change?

Unlike our competitors we will replace all fleet trackers FREE OF CHARGE. This offer is only available if you replace your units before December 1, 2016. Any units that are not replaced by this date will incur a replacement fee.

How will this affect my monthly fee?

Your monthly fee will remain unchanged.

Will I lose my stored history when I convert to a 3G system?

All stored history will transfer if you install the 3G devices before January 1, 2017. There is no guarantee your stored history will transfer after this date.

Why should I replace my tracking units now?

Everyone will be forced to replace all 2G GPS tracking units with new hardware before the end of 2016. 2G coverage is already deteriorating and will continue to do so throughout the year. If you wait until after the reports stop coming in you may lose the stored history for those vehicles. Replacing your tracking devices early allows you to take advantage of the new 3G technology.  If you wait until the last minute to replace your 2G units shipping delays run the added risk of losing valuable data.

What are the advantages of 3G?

The 3G network is both faster and more reliable than the current 2G network. Installing 3G units will improve efficiency, saving your business time and money. Additionally, you will receive all new hardware with brand new 1-year warrantees.

Do I have to return my old units?

No. You can dispose of old units once the new ones have been installed.
